Unforgettable Celebration: Shelter Surprises Beloved Senior Dog with a Special Birthday Party

Allow us to introduce you to Loco, a spirited senior pup who recently reached a significant milestone in her life. Birthdays at the animal shelter often pass by without much fanfare, but for Loco, the dedicated staff at the Spartanburg Humane Society wanted to create an unforgettable experience she would cherish.

“Wearing a birthday hat and a frilly collar, Loco was surrounded by the entire staff, who serenaded her with a heartfelt song,” shared Angel Cox, the chief operating officer at the Spartanburg Humane Society, with The Dodo. “She indulged in a sweet potato cake and absolutely loved it! The company responsible for the cake even gifted her a Happy Birthday banner for her office door.”

The guest list comprised Loco’s favorite people, although no dogs were allowed to attend the celebration.

“Loco is quite selective about the people she forms bonds with,” Cox explained. “When she loves you, she truly loves you. Conversely, she strongly dislikes those she doesn’t favor, and she doesn’t get along with other dogs at all.”

Despite the absence of fellow canines, everyone reveled in honoring the lively little gem who has won their hearts over the past two years.

Loco, who was surrendered to the shelter in 2020 due to ongoing medical issues, has become an iconic figure at the shelter. She enjoys her own comfortable space, far removed from both dogs and people she would rather avoid.

“We relocated her to a cozy office setting,” Cox revealed. “She has three to four dog beds and happily snoozes in each one.”

Throughout her stay at the shelter, Loco has faced various medical challenges.

“When she first arrived, she was 13 years old, heartworm positive, had thyroid issues, and hip problems. This made her less likely to be adopted since her care would be costly for most people,” Cox explained.

However, Loco has proven herself to be a true fighter. She is now heartworm negative, receives regular vaccinations, and takes thyroid medication to maintain her well-being.

Despite her age, Loco remains in good health aside from her previous ailments. Embracing her role as the “office dog,” she no longer seeks a new home, but that doesn’t mean she lives an ordinary shelter life. Cox emphasized that Loco’s spirited nature has made her one of the most unforgettable dogs they have ever had the pleasure of caring for.

Here’s to many more joyous birthdays, dear Loco!
