Senior cats are from the eleventh year and beyond are equally 60 years old in relation to people years. They are hardly to be an apple in human’s eyes because of their age. Most people think and assume that senior cats will not be as active and loving as kittens or adult ones. In fact, all cats are the same. They all need a human’s love and attention for the rest time of their lives. However, there have been still a lot of senior cats at the shelter so far. They are underlooked without hesitation by a lot of people.
One of the shelters in New Jersey, US Voorhees Animal Orphanage received a not really good-looking senior kitty who longed for love and care. He happened to be at the age of 15, which is about nearly 80 years old in human years! In spite of the cat’s aging condition, all the staff fell in love with his sweet-loving personality. The shelter named him Barnaby.
Barnaby’s fur was uncared-for, his ear was bitten, but his round eyes said it all. He really wanted to have a loving home to enjoy his living years. Voorhees Animal Orphanage knew Barnaby’s inmost feelings, so they posted a few pictures of Barnaby on Facebook, hoping someone would adopt this fragile soul.
“This super affectionate fellow shouldn’t be spending his golden years in the shelter.” – The shelter said.
As mentioned above, Barnaby’s situation was quite difficult to be accepted. Not many people valued the calmness and everlasting affection from a senior kitty. After several days of trying, on one fateful day, Sheehan Veterinary Centre’s founders saw Barnaby, and they knew that the cat was theirs. Turns out, our poor senior cat wouldn’t have to stay in the shelter anymore.
“When we saw his picture on Facebook, we felt that he really needed lots of vet care just on his age and appearance.” – Dr. Ed Sheehan and his wife Clare Sheehan, finally adopted Barnaby.
Dr. Ed had a full checkup for Barnaby’s health, including blood work and diet. All the staff in Sheehan Veterinary Centre was frantically in love with the cat who just arrived at the center for a few hours. It seemed like Barnaby knew where he belonged, he strutted around the office as if he had been here since his childhood.
Rachel, a vet tech of Sheehan Veterinary Centre, said: “When mopping the floors, he followed behind to make sure no spot was missed. At the end of the night, he sits on my lap to make sure I do the books correctly.”
“We have him on antibiotics and he seems to be improving! He has put on weight (almost a whole pound), and his coat is even starting to look better.” – She continued.
Some good signs started to happen with Barnaby. Needless to say, Dr.Ed and Clare were full of joy when they saw the cat’s progress. On top of that, the cat was more confident to show his true colors toward food.
“He loves his special senior food and enjoys being brushed regularly. He also takes his antibiotics like a champ and doesn’t complain at all.” – Rachel said.
Even though Barnaby needed a lot of special medical treatments, Dr. Ed embraced the cat with all his heart. Dr. Ed’s wife declared that their loving senior cat was well-fed and well taken care of by the center.
“Barnaby is more than a ‘house cat’ to us. He is well-loved and very cared for by Dr. Sheehan, myself, and our entire staff that he loves.” – Clare said.
Due to Barnaby’s aging condition, there were some difficulties in feeding and checking his nutrient properly. Notwithstanding, he was too adorable to be ignored. The staff were patiently nursing him and spoon-feeding him to make sure that his health was prioritized.
“Also Doc [Ed] noticed his dilated pupils. He feels it’s his old age as he doesn’t see much. He has adjusted well and is getting lots of love and care. He’s a happy boy.” – Said Clare.
“Keeping him healthy and happy is our goal and to make the rest of his life a happy one. Who knows the trials and tribulations he went through but now his Veterinarian Dad and I and the rest of his Vet Tech and Assistants family will love and care for him.” – She continued.
Thankfully, Barnaby’s years were fulfilled with love, enjoyment, and caring. Thanks to Dr.Ed, Clare, and all the staff at Sheehan Veterinary Centre, his life was fully saved.
